Creating Content for a Boring Industry

Great Content

So you operate in a boring industry and need to create content, or it’s a task you’ve been charged with – what do you do? Well let’s get one thing straight from the very beginning; there’s no such thing as a boring industry, just boring content. Got it? Right!

Even those industries traditionally relegated to the confines of ‘boring’ like insurance, accounting and law can use content to leverage digital marketing, content marketing and social media to traffic drive and generate conversions.

How? Well you just need to approach it with interest and with a clear understanding of the type of content that your ideal client would find of interest. And here’s a few more tips for you:

  1. Identify that you are actually in a fairly unique position – if you’re in a ‘boring’ industry then chances are that not many people are there creating innovative content so you have the opportunity to really stand out.
  2. Create infographics – content doesn’t just have to be articles, ebooks, whitepapers, newsletters and blog posts – think a little different and present the same information in a more visual way.
  3. Answer questions – look at comments on other content (yours and your competitors’) and determine the questions your readership actually wants answered and answer them. You will already have people interested in what you have to say.
  4. Connect unrelated things – approach content from a different angle and connect seemingly unrelated concepts to intrigue and engage.
  5. Incorporate user-generated content – there’s nothing in the rule book that says you need to create every single piece of content yourself. Get your readers involved in the process and get them to contribute content themselves.

Other tips include staying relevant, telling brand stories, know your customers so you can speak their language, their way and giving away practical guides – everyone likes a little something for free.
